So here goes... If we took a genetic sample from EVERY chicken then we could make sure to rotate through the stock and keep making chickens that are genetically diverse enough to sustain us. (I think it is very reasonable to assume eating a huge genetic variety is better than eating the same thing over and over). Then, we would not be eating hollow, fabricated, tofu-esque chicken meat but the real genetic deal.
The idea is that if you took one chicken brain and wired it up to a GIGANTIC pile of chicken flesh so that you're only killing one organism but have the meat form 40,000 per animal! I imagine it would hang is sheets in an aircraft hanger with the "brain" in the control room... It would be like huge flesh shower curtains on which you would grow all legs, all breasts, or all wings! You would "terminate" the individual then process it's "body" and then start with the next genetic sample. By the time we get through the library once you and I will probably be dead! To me it seems like farming of the future, a Utopian future where all farm animals roam free!
As it stands we need lots of land, and infrastructure for farming lots of animals... hundreds of thousands of individuals are killed each day after living a life very near abuse. We eat animals everyday (those of us that do) that if not abused, did not have a high "value" placed on their enjoyment of their life. So why not physically remove the parts we do not need to grow and make a version of a chicken for our purposes! I use chickens as an example but I bet it could work for many animals!
Now, letting all of the barn yard animals free may not seem like a good idea, but now that we have the genetic library we do not need them anymore! It would be pack ratting to keep all of them around! Plus after eons of being domesticated do they not deserve their freedom! Ok so this scenario is a little CRAZY, but where are we going with food production? We already know that tearing down the rainforest for grazing pastureland is like giving the earth Lung cancer so what IS the solution? I wanna hear thoughts and fun scenarios! ;)
I think Urban homesteading is a good idea where the cities will allow it, and it's the animals they have issues with not the growing of veggies and fruit! Plant yourself a plot!! Buy from local farmers whenever possible! ask your neighbors and keep an ear to the ground! All we have to do is change the way everyone thinks about the commercial food industry! LOL it's that easy!
Wow this is GREAT and about farming and diversity! Have a listen: http://www.ted.com/talks/cary_fowler_one_seed_at_a_time_protecting_the_future_of_food.html
